After a great day outdoors, you start to notice a red, itchy rash on your arm. You’ve likely bumped into poison oak, poison sumac, or a poison ivy plant, but without seeing the poisonous plant you’ve come into contact with, how do you what’s causing the rash?
What Does A Poison Ivy Rash Look Like?
While poison ivy, oak, and sumac plants each look different, they all contain the same-rash triggering oil known as urushiol. Urushiol oil can be found in every part of a poison ivy plant, from the leaves to the stems to the roots. This means that even if poison ivy leaves have fallen off or you’ve mowed over the plants in an attempt at poison ivy removal, contact with the plants is still dangerous.
Substantial amounts of urushiol can absorb into your skin within just a few minutes. Once urushiol is absorbed into the skin, it triggers an immune system response that can cause a painful rash, itching, and even blisters.
A poison ivy rash can take hours, and sometimes even days, to appear after contact with the plant!
Symptoms Of A Poison Ivy Rash
- Itchy skin before the rash appears
- Raised red bumps and blisters
- Typically filled with a clear fluid
- The rash appears in a streak/line pattern (where the plant brushed up against the skin)
- In rare, severe cases, black spots or streaks may appear on the skin

How Long Does A Poison Ivy Rash Last? (How About Oak & Sumac?)
How long your poison ivy, sumac, or oak plant rash lasts can depend on a variety of factors.
- The extent of exposure and severity of the rash
- How you treat the rash
- Your past contact with poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac
- You’ve had a poison ivy/oak/sumac rash before: the rash lasts around 1-14 days
- You’ve never had a poison ivy/oak/sumac rash before: the rash can last up to 21 days (or longer)
Poison Ivy Treatment, Poison Oak Treatment, & Poison Sumac Treatment
Since all three poisonous plant rashes are caused by the same substance (urushiol), they can all be treated the same way. Zanfel Poison Ivy, Oak & Sumac Wash® is a safe and effective topical solution for a reaction caused by exposure to poison ivy, oak, and sumac. Zanfel is a specially formulated wash that is clinically shown to remove urushiol from the skin and relieve itching ANYTIME after an outbreak.
How Can I Build A Poison Ivy Immunity?
When it comes to poison ivy prevention, it isn’t enough to simply watch your step. Poisonous plants easily strike by a few distracted seconds of contact. A better way to protect yourself and your loved ones is with Rhus Toxicodendron oral solution (Outdoor Joe’s®). With Outdoor Joe’s® Rhus Tox oral solution, most individuals achieve complete immunity to poison ivy, while others experience less severe reactions when exposed to poisonous plants.
“I am very allergic to the urushiol in poison oak. I have been to the emergency room because of the allergic reactions to poison oak. I like to camp in the forests of California/Oregon where there is plenty of urushiol-producing plants. Rhus Tox has taken away the allergic reactions I get from urushiol. It is a wonderful product.”
