Yep, and it’s 68 feet of itch!

If you think you’ve seen a big poison ivy plant before, think again! The tallest poison ivy vine ever recorded was discovered in the woods of Paris, Ontario, Canada, and it stands at an astonishing 68 feet tall. That’s about the height of two city buses stacked end to end!

A Record-Breaking Discovery

The towering vine was found by Ontario resident Robert Fedrock, who first spotted it while walking through a wooded area on his property. “At first, I didn’t even realize it was poison ivy,” Robert said. “The leaves didn’t start until about ten feet off the ground, and the vine just looked like a hairy creature from Stranger Things.”

After some digging, literally, Robert cleared out the surrounding buckthorn to get a better look. Unfortunately, his investigation confirmed the plant was poison ivy, and the resulting rashes confirmed it even more. Despite the itch, he had found something truly rare: the world’s tallest poison ivy plant, officially recognized by Guinness World Records.

Poison Ivy 101: What You Need to Know

While most poison ivy vines grow to just 2–3 feet tall, they can also climb trees and fences as vines. In ideal conditions, they can grow much longer, but a 68-foot vine is exceptionally rare.
Here are a few basic facts about poison ivy to help you stay informed and protected:

What Does Poison Ivy Look Like?

  • The classic rule: “Leaves of three, let it be.”
  • Each leaf group has three-pointed leaflets.
  • It can grow as a ground plant, a shrub, or a climbing vine.

What Makes Poison Ivy So Irritating?

  • The poison ivy rash is caused by urushiol, an oil found in all parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, roots, and even dead or decaying ivy.
  • Urushiol can linger on tools, clothes, pets, and soil long after contact.

How Can You Avoid Poison Ivy?

  • Learn to identify it in all seasons. In the fall, the leaves often turn red or orange.
  • Wear gloves, long sleeves, and pants when hiking, gardening, or clearing brush.
  • Wash your hands and gear thoroughly after being outdoors.
